Op zaterdagavond 24 november 2007 bezocht Theo van Berlo (54) zijn stamkroeg, het Stadscafé aan de Markt in Helmond. Hij verliet het café na een gezellige avond en liep naar huis via de Heistraat, ondanks waarschuwingen van de kroegeigenaar voor overvallen in die hele wijk. Theo kwam nooit thuis. De politie en familie hebben vele zoekacties gedaan met onder andere speurhonden, duikers, flyeren en oproepen op tv, maar Theo leek spoorloos verdwenen. Zes weken later, op 8 januari 2008, zag een vrachtwagenchauffeur het lichaam van Theo drijven in de Zuid-Willemsvaart. Hij bleek slachtoffer te zijn van een gewelddadige roofoverval.
Theo van Berlo was een voormalig kroegeigenaar en “bekend” persoon in Helmond. Hij was een zanger en gitarist in verschillende bandjes. In 2007 werkte hij bij een beveiligingsbedrijf, dat alarm sloeg toen hij niet kwam opdagen voor een belangrijke afspraak. Theo had een dochter en een zoon.
Het politieonderzoek leidde in april 2008 tot de arrestatie van vier mannen die betrokken waren bij de overval op Theo.
De hoofdverdachte bekende Theo tegen zijn hoofd te hebben geslagen. Ondanks deze bekentenis en de betrokkenheid van meerdere personen, werden zij vrijgesproken van moord en kregen relatief lage straffen voor diefstal met geweld. Na de rechtszaak is het politieonderzoek afgesloten, maar wat er in de zes weken tussen de overval en het vinden van Theo’s lichaam is gebeurd blijft onbekend.
De familie van Theo was zwaar teleurgesteld door de lage straffen en verbaasd dat de dood van hun vader niet als gevolg van de gepleegde misdrijven werd gezien. Meerdere keren na de moord deed zijn zoon Daniël een oproep op sociale media voor nieuwe informatie, in de hoop de zaak alsnog op te lossen en duidelijkheid te krijgen over de exacte omstandigheden van Theo’s dood. Nu doet dochter Nathalie een oproep voor antwoorden: “Wij begrijpen dat er niemand meer veroordeeld zal worden, maar we willen zo graag weten wat er is gebeurd in de zes weken dat onze vader vermist was. Was hij al overleden voordat hij in het water terechtkwam? Hoe is hij daar gekomen? Iemand moet weten wat er is gebeurd.”

In Nederland zijn er meer dan duizend onopgeloste moord- en vermissingszaken. Duizenden nabestaanden wachten nog elke dag op antwoord. Zij staan voor hun gevoel vaak in het donker, omdat de zaak verjaard is, er geen tips meer zijn of omdat er te weinig capaciteit of aandacht is vanuit politie en justitie. Maar als je een geliefde verliest, zonder te weten waar hij of zij is of wat er is gebeurd dan kan het rouwen niet beginnen, ook niet na tientallen jaren.
De Peter R. de Vries Foundation vraagt daarom dit jaar elke week aandacht voor een onopgelost moord- of vermissingszaak. Voor de Gouden tip, voor erkenning van de nabestaanden, voor bewustwording in de samenleving en voor verbeteringen in coldcaseonderzoek.
